Reece’s Vision

Does anyone know that Reece wears glasses?  Well technically she is only required to wear them at school.  Needless to say, we haven’t had them on all summer!  We had great intentions of reading all summer but that hasn’t happened.  Shhhh…don’t tell her 1st grade teacher! yikes!  Last summer when Reece had her physical, they suggested we make an eye appointment for her.  We did that and I’ll never forget how crazy it was to watch her struggle with the eye exam.  She couldn’t see well and we didn’t know it!  So she picked out the most adorable kids glasses ever and she wore them her Kindergarten year at school.  At least I think she did most of the time.

A year has already passed and as we gear up to send this little cutie to 1st grade, we had her annual eye exam.  It was absolutely brutal!  Our optometrist earned her pay today!  She skips letters, says the wrong ones, and gets frustrated because she is asked to read so many lines.  UGH!  I have already told Brian he gets to experience the next appointment.  It’s hard to describe unless you are the one in there.  Each time she says a letter wrong your stomach clinches in knots!  Here’s a video clip of part of her exam today…

In the end she determined that her vision is actually slightly better but astigmatism is worse and we really need to keep on top of things with her teacher.  She could have tracking issues…we need to pay attention to skipping letters or words when reading.  And she struggles with switching from near to far vision (so copying from the board could be troublesome).  Both of these things could require vision therapy in the future.  Oh I hope not….Morgan did that for a period of time and it was NOT fun.  For now, she told us to try to do mazes and dot to dots with one eye covered and draw lines and circle letters in magazine text (basically vision therapy exercises).  Some of this could be from not wearing glasses all summer.  Her eyes need to adjust to being corrected on a consistent basis.  But she gets to keep her adorable little glasses and some new lenses should be arriving soon before school starts and we’re hoping for the best.
