I’m not a hunter but my dad and brother are. Therefore, it was a part of our family life growing up. I have memories of many pictures of camo-clad hunters with dead birds laid out in front. In the spirit of letting my own children explore everything the world has to offer…Morgan got her first turkey permit! This is not really what I would want to do with my spare time but I’m not going to be the one to stifle her growth as a well-rounded pre-teen. So, after school I took her to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks office to get her permit. I had researched it a bit online per my dad’s instructions and I was nervous! The way it read to me, if you hadn’t successfully completed a Hunters Safety course then you were going to be hauled off to jail by merely walking in to try to get a permit. Okay…that is a very large exaggeration but hey–this is out of my comfort zone guys!On Saturday morning, April 2, she had plans to go hunting with my dad (Papa), uncle Greg, and Collin. She was ready! She had her bag packed with the camo coat she got from Papa at Christmas time and we pulled together the warmest clothes and boots we had. She was going to do this no matter what! Even the fact that she had to be in Lawrence, KS hours later for 2 tournament soccer games. This 12 year old gal is BUSY! They scurried out very early morning. Unfortunately, the hunt was not as successful as they were hoping for (I feel like this is always the case with hunting tales!)….Turkeys 1, hunters 0. No shots fired. Heard lots of gobbles. Must need to work on our calling skills. Some cold toes. Learned about some trees and lichens. Saw a squirrel, heard a woodpecker…
Either way, I’m proud of our little hunters for trying something new, for getting out of the comfort zone, and just being all-around awesome.
