The average cost of raising a child born in 2003 to the age of 18 is $226,813 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual “Expenditures on Children by Families” report. I feel like we might be well on our way with Morgan, age 12. On 3.3.16 we added a shiny new set of braces to her smile with royal blue rubber bands in honor of the Royals (we were heading to Royals Spring Training the next week). Her teeth are naturally very straight, no spacing or bite problems, but braces would help give her a more beautiful smile. This shouldn’t cost much right since it’s not a complicated case!? Well braces are just braces and they are expensive but a necessary part of a pre-teens life. She has totally embraced them and not complained once of pain (I know she wants to, but she’s too sweet).
Now we also have a lovely pair of glasses! And we are kicking ourselves for not adding her to our vision insurance in January. A couple of years ago we took her in for an eye exam because she was having some mild difficulty with reading. It was advised to me by a teacher friend to have her eyes checked as poor vision could be contributing to her issues. And I’ll never forget when my best friend, Lisa, took her daughter, Olivia, in for an exam and she was practically blind and they didn’t know. Well that’s an obvious exaggeration but her vision was pretty bad and Lisa felt terrible that she was just figuring it out. It was determined that Morgan’s vision wasn’t perfect but she didn’t recommend glasses at that point. She did recommend Vision Therapy for her which we did at home religiously every day. Excruciating. Fast forward a couple years and Morgan’s reading is right on track but she is complaining of blurry vision. So, it appears her eyes are bad enough now that she would benefit from wearing glasses. After a week of waiting and Morgan asking every afternoon if the glasses had arrived…the glasses came in! We have a new and improved Morgan and have made a dent in our $226,813. We love you Morgan and you are worth every cent 🙂

Jake has won baseball championship games in the past but it has been awhile and not with Brian being the head coach. So with Royals home opener tickets going unused in Brian’s pocket and hundreds of dollars spent, every morsel of packed food eaten, dust in every crevice of our bodies, we brought home a championship trophy and I couldn’t be more happy about it. Wouldn’t change a thing. Congratulations Brian, Jake, our Bulldogs, and their families. What a great way to kick off the baseball season!

So we were headed out on our way to a baseball game last night bundled up in coats and hats and Reece wondered why we were doing this when it’s Spring! She said the groundhog did not see his shadow so it was supposed to be Spring! Which led to a discussion about animals of course. She said that the groundhog was sooooo cute. Mom, don’t you think that groundhog is really cute? I quickly said, no I actually do not think it is cute at all! Then I said, you think all animals are cute, Reece!! This is when she promptly corrected me and said…I do not think all animals are cute! I do not think raccoon’s are cute, I do not think skunks are cute, and I do not think anteaters are cute! So I stand corrected….once again 🙂
I’m not a hunter but my dad and brother are. Therefore, it was a part of our family life growing up. I have memories of many pictures of camo-clad hunters with dead birds laid out in front. In the spirit of letting my own children explore everything the world has to offer…Morgan got her first turkey permit! This is not really what I would want to do with my spare time but I’m not going to be the one to stifle her growth as a well-rounded pre-teen. So, after school I took her to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks office to get her permit. I had researched it a bit online per my dad’s instructions and I was nervous! The way it read to me, if you hadn’t successfully completed a Hunters Safety course then you were going to be hauled off to jail by merely walking in to try to get a permit. Okay…that is a very large exaggeration but hey–this is out of my comfort zone guys!On Saturday morning, April 2, she had plans to go hunting with my dad (Papa), uncle Greg, and Collin. She was ready! She had her bag packed with the camo coat she got from Papa at Christmas time and we pulled together the warmest clothes and boots we had. She was going to do this no matter what! Even the fact that she had to be in Lawrence, KS hours later for 2 tournament soccer games. This 12 year old gal is BUSY! They scurried out very early morning. Unfortunately, the hunt was not as successful as they were hoping for (I feel like this is always the case with hunting tales!)….Turkeys 1, hunters 0. No shots fired. Heard lots of gobbles. Must need to work on our calling skills. Some cold toes. Learned about some trees and lichens. Saw a squirrel, heard a woodpecker…
