Pre-teens are expensive

The average cost of raising a child born in 2003 to the age of 18 is $226,813 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual “Expenditures on Children by Families” report.  I feel like we might be well on our way with Morgan, age 12.  On 3.3.16 we added a shiny new set of braces to her smile with royal blue rubber bands in honor of the Royals (we were heading to Royals Spring Training the next week).  Her teeth are naturally very straight, no spacing or bite problems, but braces would help give her a more beautiful smile.  This shouldn’t cost much right since it’s not a complicated case!?  Well braces are just braces and they are expensive but a necessary part of a pre-teens life.  She has totally embraced them and not complained once of pain (I know she wants to, but she’s too sweet).

Now we also have a lovely pair of glasses!  And we are kicking ourselves for not adding her to our vision insurance in January.  A couple of years ago we took her in for an eye exam because she was having some mild difficulty with reading.  It was advised to me by a teacher friend to have her eyes checked as poor vision could be contributing to her issues.  And I’ll never forget when my best friend, Lisa, took her daughter, Olivia, in for an exam and she was practically blind and they didn’t know.  Well that’s an obvious exaggeration but her vision was pretty bad and Lisa felt terrible that she was just figuring it out.  It was determined that Morgan’s vision wasn’t perfect but she didn’t recommend glasses at that point.  She did recommend Vision Therapy for her which we did at home religiously every day.  Excruciating.  Fast forward a couple years and Morgan’s reading is right on track but she is complaining of blurry vision.  So, it appears her eyes are bad enough now that she would benefit from wearing glasses.  After a week of waiting and Morgan asking every afternoon if the glasses had arrived…the glasses came in!  We have a new and improved Morgan and have made a dent in our $226,813.  We love you Morgan and you are worth every cent 🙂

Reece has glasses too (she wears at school only as of Sept 2015)

Hitting the Links

After much deliberation, Brian decided to join Lake Quivira Golf Club.  Again, recall on my previous post that time is abundant and money is growing on trees!?  hmmm…Well, this family loves the sport of golf so the thought is, this will be cost effective and lots of fun!  The boys have aspirations of playing ‘TONS’ of golf this summer and I finally purchased a set of clubs for myself so we are getting started.  They have been on our backyard putting green quite often lately and I am still left wondering when I will have time to learn to play.  yikes!

11.5.15 The Putting Green is done!!

On Friday, April 15th, we were out of school for a teachers professional day, so Brian took the boys for their first round out at Lake Quivira and they had an amazing time!

Congrats Drew!

IMG_0178IMG_0173

Drew won his first baseball championship over the weekend!  Way to go Drew Boo and the Strike Zone Bulldogs!!  This is a new team for Drew so we are just in the beginning of the season and getting to know new coaches, families, and players.  For the past two years, Drew has played on the Sluggers which was a group of buddies from school and families we love and know very well.  We miss the Sluggers but we know we will make new friends! An opportunity came up for  Drew and a few other Sluggers to try out for the Strike Zone Bulldogs U8 club team.  So why not?!  We need to add some more club sports to our family.  Time is abundant and money is growing on trees right!?  Clearly that is a joke!  This team is a bigger time commitment…probably 7 weekend tournaments and practice 2-3 times per week (some are optional).  We usually only make it to 1 or 2 of the mandatory ones. This is more than Jake ever did in a season I think but we’ll give it a shot!  I mean Drew does aspire to be Alcides Escobar so we should probably get started!  Actually, according to his 2nd grade ‘star of the week’ poster  we just completed, he is going to be an MLS player! Either way, I think we better think of a back up plan for a career but I’m thrilled that he has these dreams!  I think I have heard him say in the past that he wants to be a dad when he grows up, so maybe he does have a practical side.  On a side note, since Alcides is his favorite baseball player, we should bring this up…if you didn’t see the amazing catch and double play on 4.14.16 in the game against Houston, holy smokes…you should google it.

We are two tournaments in and one league game completed for the season with the SZ Bulldogs and we are having a great time!  Drew is learning a lot and making some new friends along with his 3 other retired Slugger buddies.  And most importantly, he is enamored with his new uniforms.  Let’s agree…there is nothing cuter than a little 8 year old in a baseball uniform!

After a weekend of successful games, they brought home the championship trophy! I’m so happy for Drew and the team for having fun and working hard all weekend.  Drew played really hard in a soccer game just prior to these finals games so he was running on wobbly legs and adrenaline I’m sure.

Unfortunately, I missed the championship game because I was 15 minutes away at Reece’s soccer game.  I thought I would make it back in time to see an inning or two but the game went too quick!  I’m happy I at least made it for the trophy presentation.   So we have a shiny new medal and a big adorable snaggletooth/hillbilly grin that only a mom would love (or maybe a proud aunt or grandparent).

Our Cello Player

Morgan plays the cello. She began playing when it was first made available to students to start playing musical instruments in grade school (5th grade). She chose the cello. Yep, a very large instrument and also not the cheapest when it comes to rental fees. That’s ok, I’m supportive because she already has a good musical base to build on. For years, I took her to Kindermusik lessons as a toddler…because you can do that when it’s your first baby and you have all the time in the world to devote to this one precious child in your life. Every Saturday I would dance around with her and play instruments and sing because someone told me this was really good for toddlers. Ok I’m in…I’ll do whatever I need to do for her to be a successful and well rounded toddler and I’m sure she will be the smartest too. All of this makes me chuckle now that I have 4. Don’t get me wrong, I completely want the very best for all of them.  But, I’m not entirely convinced that putting a toddler in music classes is going to make her the next President of the United States. I digress. She has continued to play cello through her 7th grade year and I am now completely envious of her talent. Listening to her play from day 1 to today is absolutely mind-blowing. Middle school orchestra students are very talented! Last week I had tears in my eyes listening to them play in their 7th grade ensemble concert. They were GOOD! Last night, April 11, Morgan played in her last concert for the school year and probably her last concert ever. She has decided she does not want to continue to play cello. She is no longer enjoying it. This makes me incredibly sad because of all of her hard work she has put in! However, I do want her to be happy and pursue interests that she is passionate about. Maybe this is just another phase of life for her that we will have great memories of and there will be something else coming that we will adore. Whatever life has in store for us is yet to be determined. But for now, I have tears in my eyes and I couldn’t be more proud of what she has accomplished as a musician and as a young lady.

Bieber Fever

My sweet 12 year old daughter really never asks for a whole lot.  Honestly, she doesn’t!  But a few months back she asked me if we could get tickets to the Justin Bieber concert.  I actually sing JB songs regularly in my car, so I’m not judging.  AND we all know I LOVE concerts – always have and probably always will, so I was actually sort of proud that she had an interest in going to one!  What I wasn’t proud of, was the fact that the tickets had been sold out since like 10 seconds after they went on sale and to get them on Stub Hub, we would be paying $500 for 2 tickets in the rafters.   Whoa, not even a giant lover of music was willing to do that!  So in a last ditch effort, I asked my sister to check with her work contacts for tickets in the Hallmark Suite at the Sprint Center.  My sister apparently worked her magic and just before Spring Break we found out that we had 4 tickets!  WOO HOO!  You can’t even imagine how happy this made Morgan and my sister for making her so happy!  Does that make sense!?  Morgan asked her sweet friend, Emma, to join her who has a strong case of Bieber Fever.  So, on Wednesday, April 6th, The four of us went to dinner in the P&L, girls bought $50 T-Shirts, got the closest we will probably ever get to Eric Hosmer, ran into Dom Dwyer & his wife, and enjoyed every last minute of the JB show–super late on a school night.

IMG_3733

The girls looked adorable–2 librarians amongst lots of skimpy teeny-bopper outfits.  I couldn’t be happier.  They were the most adorable 12 year olds in the Sprint Center.IMG_3735

Just a side bar….I’ve been to A LOT of concerts in my lifetime.  This was by far the loudest.  It’s either my age, or perhaps it’s because the concerts I usually attend aren’t sold out, or I’m not used to being around thousands of teens, or maybe JB is just THAT POPULAR!  Either way, I’m happy to share this experience with Morgan and extra special thanks to Aunt Shauna for making it happen!  Bieber Fever baby!

It’s Baseball Season!

It’s the weekend of April 1st, 3and2 Baseball has its Season Opener Tournament which means both Jake and Drew are playing in it (minimum of 3 games each), Jake has a buckle fracture in his right wrist which limits him to only some pitching & bunting, Morgan is playing in a soccer tournament in Lawrence (min of 3 games) and turkey hunting, Drew also has a league soccer game that we are praying doesn’t conflict with a baseball game, Reece has a soccer game and a birthday party to attend, and Brian bought tickets for us to go to the Royals Home Opener Sunday night.  SHOOT…how is this all going to work out!?  At this point, I’m not rattled very much with scheduling because it’s a daily battle in this household, but I’m not going to lie, I’m a little nervous on this one!  Here’s why…Baseball season is always more complicated.  Bottom line.  Brian is the coach of Jake’s baseball team which means he gets Jake and I get the other 3.  This also means I miss a lot of Jake’s stuff and Brian misses a lot of MD&R’s stuff sometimes, boo!)  And baseball is time consuming and hard to plan around (ie if you win you keep playing on Sunday).  All I have to say is thank goodness for family and friends that are willing to help out!  THANK YOU!

Brian LOVES baseball so for him to be able to coach this team is a blessing.  It is also a blessing for Jake who loves the competitive nature of the sport.  Because he also plays competitive soccer, it is difficult for him to find a team that will take him and his crazy schedule on!  Coaches don’t typically want to deal with a kiddo that has to sometimes choose between attending a soccer game and a baseball game.  They want kids that are 100% committed to that sport during that time frame.  Let me present to you…Bulldogs Baseball!  This is a group of 4th grade boys who love the game of baseball but also love other sports!  These boys are very dear to our hearts because Brian has put a lot of time into coaching and developing them.  He treats all of them like they are part of our family.  The team has lost and gained some players over the years but the commitment and Bulldogs spirit has remained the same.  These boys are awesome.

4.7.13 Bulldogs Triple Crown Tourn Lees Summit (2)

By Sunday night, the Bulldogs had fought their way into the championship game against the Steelers (which happens to be coached by Brian’s childhood friend).  These boys were tired–we had endured hail, super cold weather, mega windy conditions, etc. but no one gave up.  They rallied through a tense last few innings and won the championship!  The look on these kids’ faces I will never forget.  IMG_3700Jake has won baseball championship games in the past but it has been awhile and not with Brian being the head coach.  So with Royals home opener tickets going unused in Brian’s pocket and hundreds of dollars spent, every morsel of packed food eaten, dust in every crevice of our bodies, we brought home a championship trophy and I couldn’t be more happy about it.  Wouldn’t change a thing. Congratulations Brian, Jake, our Bulldogs, and their families.  What a great way to kick off the baseball season!

IMG_369320160403_202413

Side note…I’ve never seen Jake more excited about a trophy.  I mean it is quite huge, so I guess that mere fact makes it pretty awesome.  He got out his stool, removed all of his trophies and trinkets from his dresser and put them all back up in a certain special order.  Doing this takes quite a bit of time!  The care and attention he put into this little project makes me smile, maybe even more than the athleticism displayed this weekend.  It’s a life lesson to take pride in yourself and others.  Jakers, I am so happy that you are proud!  GO BULLDOGS!

Groundhog

csm_2ndinernational_47d48e845cSo we were headed out on our way to a baseball game last night bundled up in coats and hats and Reece wondered why we were doing this when it’s Spring! She said the groundhog did not see his shadow so it was supposed to be Spring! Which led to a discussion about animals of course. She said that the groundhog was sooooo cute. Mom, don’t you think that groundhog is really cute? I quickly said, no I actually do not think it is cute at all! Then I said, you think all animals are cute, Reece!! This is when she promptly corrected me and said…I do not think all animals are cute! I do not think raccoon’s are cute, I do not think skunks are cute, and I do not think anteaters are cute! So I stand corrected….once again 🙂

P.S. It was hailing on us at the baseball game on April 1st…is this an April Fools Joke?!

First Turkey Hunt

IMG_3675I’m not a hunter but my dad and brother are. Therefore, it was a part of our family life growing up. I have memories of many pictures of camo-clad hunters with dead birds laid out in front. In the spirit of letting my own children explore everything the world has to offer…Morgan got her first turkey permit! This is not really what I would want to do with my spare time but I’m not going to be the one to stifle her growth as a well-rounded pre-teen. So, after school I took her to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks office to get her permit. I had researched it a bit online per my dad’s instructions and I was nervous! The way it read to me, if you hadn’t successfully completed a Hunters Safety course then you were going to be hauled off to jail by merely walking in to try to get a permit. Okay…that is a very large exaggeration but hey–this is out of my comfort zone guys!On Saturday morning, April 2, she had plans to go hunting with my dad (Papa), uncle Greg, and Collin. She was ready! She had her bag packed with the camo coat she got from Papa at Christmas time and we pulled together the warmest clothes and boots we had. She was going to do this no matter what! Even the fact that she had to be in Lawrence, KS hours later for 2 tournament soccer games. This 12 year old gal is BUSY! They scurried out very early morning. Unfortunately, the hunt was not as successful as they were hoping for (I feel like this is always the case with hunting tales!)….Turkeys 1, hunters 0. No shots fired. Heard lots of gobbles. Must need to work on our calling skills. Some cold toes. Learned about some trees and lichens. Saw a squirrel, heard a woodpecker…
Either way, I’m proud of our little hunters for trying something new, for getting out of the comfort zone, and just being all-around awesome.IMG_20160402_055735076_HDR
