Drew won his first baseball championship over the weekend! Way to go Drew Boo and the Strike Zone Bulldogs!! This is a new team for Drew so we are just in the beginning of the season and getting to know new coaches, families, and players. For the past two years, Drew has played on the Sluggers which was a group of buddies from school and families we love and know very well. We miss the Sluggers but we know we will make new friends! An opportunity came up for Drew and a few other Sluggers to try out for the Strike Zone Bulldogs U8 club team. So why not?! We need to add some more club sports to our family. Time is abundant and money is growing on trees right!? Clearly that is a joke! This team is a bigger time commitment…probably 7 weekend tournaments and practice 2-3 times per week (some are optional). We usually only make it to 1 or 2 of the mandatory ones. This is more than Jake ever did in a season I think but we’ll give it a shot! I mean Drew does aspire to be Alcides Escobar so we should probably get started! Actually, according to his 2nd grade ‘star of the week’ poster we just completed, he is going to be an MLS player! Either way, I think we better think of a back up plan for a career but I’m thrilled that he has these dreams! I think I have heard him say in the past that he wants to be a dad when he grows up, so maybe he does have a practical side. On a side note, since Alcides is his favorite baseball player, we should bring this up…if you didn’t see the amazing catch and double play on 4.14.16 in the game against Houston, holy smokes…you should google it.
We are two tournaments in and one league game completed for the season with the SZ Bulldogs and we are having a great time! Drew is learning a lot and making some new friends along with his 3 other retired Slugger buddies. And most importantly, he is enamored with his new uniforms. Let’s agree…there is nothing cuter than a little 8 year old in a baseball uniform!
After a weekend of successful games, they brought home the championship trophy! I’m so happy for Drew and the team for having fun and working hard all weekend. Drew played really hard in a soccer game just prior to these finals games so he was running on wobbly legs and adrenaline I’m sure.
Unfortunately, I missed the championship game because I was 15 minutes away at Reece’s soccer game. I thought I would make it back in time to see an inning or two but the game went too quick! I’m happy I at least made it for the trophy presentation. So we have a shiny new medal and a big adorable snaggletooth/hillbilly grin that only a mom would love (or maybe a proud aunt or grandparent).
