Dream It Then Be It…Part 2

So it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for (I hope!).  Did Reece make it to the top of that rope?  YES…SHE DID!  Holy cow, all this anticipation.  I literally was sick to my stomach sitting at gymnastics class yesterday.  All this build up she had put on us!  It’s way too stressful!  I wonder if she was sick to her stomach like me and the rest of the parents watching.  I had to fill them in on the story about the new leotard and the Barbie Spy Squad movie quote, so they were all pulling for her too.  She didn’t actually climb it until later in the class which means she had already done her conditioning and bar work so I was very afraid she would be too tired.  The last thing I wanted to happen is for her to come out of class disappointed.  That is an awful feeling to see your kiddos try so hard and potentially not get the results they wanted.  Even though I do really believe it is important for kids to experience adversity, in this particular case, I was definitely hoping for the positive because of the build up!   Well she rose to the occasion and although it seemed like she couldn’t go any further multiple times…that little girl pushed on.  I will never forget all the sweet gymnasts in her class cheering for her at the bottom of that rope.  Priceless.  I was so happy for her!  She later told me that her hands were very sweaty from her bars workout just prior, so it was difficult.  Awesome job Reecie!  I couldn’t be more proud of you for sticking with your dreams (and I secretly wish I was that strong).  She even got to call daddy on a business trip to share the good news.  Before bed, she was still beaming from her “best day ever” because she got to wear her new leotard, she got to the top of the rope, she got to eat pizza for lunch, and she got her costume for her ballet recital.  Wow…what a great day!  I love that kids get so excited about these moments in life, big or small.  I did not get a picture of her at the top but I hope you take 2 minutes to watch the video I took of her!  We’ve watched it numerous times.  In fact, at bedtime she had already made plans to watch it while she ate her breakfast this morning.  Hey…why not?  Might as well bask in the glory!  Here is the link to the video on YouTube (copy and paste into your web browser). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3ez22gnW3g

Dream It Then Be It

This little gymnastics girl is on a mission.  She wants to be able to climb the rope and reach the top or at least get much further than she has thus far.  This is NOT an easy task at all!  You have to be super strong to climb that thing.  When I watch her do it, I have daunting flashbacks to my days of P.E. class at Scarborough Elementary when we had to climb the rope and it was much shorter I’m sure.  I couldn’t climb that dreaded rope very well so I absolutely hated it!  Well Reece is bound and determined to climb it and she wants to do it TODAY.  No time like the present right!?

Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon she stares longingly at the very shiny leotards hanging in the lobby of KGDC Gymnastics and every Tuesday and Thursday I say no to buying one.  They’re $45…can you blame me!?  This past Tuesday, I  don’t know what got into me, but I got my wallet out and bought her a very shiny new leotard.  That moment of weakness has actually snowballed into a very entertaining couple of days!  Last night at Jake’s baseball game she was telling anyone that would listen that she was “so excited about tomorrow” she is going to have the best day because she has gymnastics practice and a shiny new leotard and she is going to tell Ms. Billie (one of her coaches) that she wants to climb the rope.  She has repeatedly discussed her ambitions at length with her siblings to the point where they are all hiding from her now.  The moment I woke her up this morning, she bounced out of bed and said she was SO EXCITED for today.  And this little lady does NOT bounce out of bed.  She’s more of a DRAG out of bed kind of gal.  As I sit here writing, she has asked me about a billion times if it’s time to leave for gymnastics yet.  I’m loving her enthusiasm and determination.  This is kind of awesome!   She has also been having some more businesslike conversations with me over these few days.  Multiple times she has said, Mom…If you can dream it, you can be it and I know what I want to do….I want to climb the rope at gymnastics.  Wow, what profound statements out of the mouth of a 5 year old!  Apparently she didn’t come up with that herself, she heard it on Barbie Spy Squad the movie, but either way, I’m proud she picked up on such a great message.  Reecie, I hope you climb that rope today, and even if you don’t get any farther than you did last time, that is totally ok with me. Keep dreaming!

Weekend Fun?

So as Brian and Jake were off goofing around in Omaha, shooting the breeze with their buddies, drinking Gatorade (or beer) and eating nachos…this mom was going a million different directions, cleaning uniforms, packing food, and applying sunscreen.  Morgan’s team competed in the Challenger Cup at Stump and Swarner Parks.  They went 1 and 2 for the tourney but they they ended on a high note.  They won their last game, 4-1.  It was so fun to watch!  These girls work really hard but most of the time it doesn’t end the way they hope.  To see them so excited for a victory was very satisfying for me.  I like to think that I’m their biggest and most loyal fan 😉   Even Drew was cheering them on!  4.24.16 Drew looking cool@ Mo's Soccer Game Let’s call it like it is…he is not great at actually watching his siblings sporting events.  He pretty much wants to eat snacks and play on his iPad, so to get a cheer out of him is pretty ground-breaking.  Morgan even had a beautiful corner-kick assist for a goal.  Yay MoMo!  4.24.16 M U13 Challenger Cup (2)4.24.16 M U13 Challenger Cup (1)

In between these soccer games, Drew was playing so hard with his StrikeZone Bulldogs.  They were competing in the Spring Fling Tourney at 3and2.  On Saturday I witnessed the craziest game I may ever see in 8 year old baseball.  The game went 9 innings and 2 and a half hours long, an hour over time limit, since tourney games can’t end in ties.  This all occurred immediately after they had just played an intense game.  These boys had been playing solid baseball from 9:45am til 2pm.  I’ve never seen anything like it!  3 extra innings where they started the last batter on 2nd and 1 out on the board.  I feel like we had the whole complex watching us.  In the end, the opponents came out on top by 1 run.  The boys were bummed but they had done all they could, they had to be exhausted!  Plus, there was still more ball to play on Sunday.  Honestly, I was just thanking my lucky stars that Reece had enough fake animals to play with, coloring pads, snacks, and a friend to keep herself occupied for that long!  We made it just in time to get to another soccer game.  Talk about a long day!

By Sunday afternoon, they went 2 and 2 for the tourney and missed the finals game by a few runs so we headed home.  To make my sad little boy’s day even more awesome, I made him get a haircut.  This was the cherry on top of his ‘horrible day.’  That’s what mom’s are supposed to do right…make them miserable!?  Listen…I have limited time to get everything done and getting him a haircut had been on my list for weeks so when my afternoon freed up a bit, I jumped on the chance. 4.24.16 Drew new SZ jersey&new haircut

He grew to love his haircut over the next few hours and we made it through the crazy weekend.  I have a super awesome baseball flip flop burn/tan line to show for it!  I’ve decided to embrace it and wear it proudly…

Omaha Spring Invitational

On Friday, April 22nd, I picked Jake up early from school so he could gather his things and travel to Omaha for the weekend to compete in a soccer tournament.  This didn’t take long because truthfully he had his bag packed for days.  He was beyond excited.  He loves most sports but he adores soccer and out of town tournaments are the high-light of the season for those kids.  Here’s the kicker…I wasn’t able to go.  This is absolutely killing me that I can’t go.  I haven’t missed an out of town tournament yet and my plan was to never miss one!  Honestly, I hate to miss a game of any kind that my kids are competing in.  However, reality set in and someone had to stay home to cover the soccer tournament Morgan’s team was playing in, Drew’s baseball tournament, and Reece’s soccer game.  WHAT!?  I’m thinking I definitely got the raw end of this deal!  Typically we pack the whole family up for these out of town tourney’s and miss a few events here in KC but that was impossible this time.  I would’ve loved nothing more than to take him myself and spend my weekend with him but as it turns out, only dads were going.  Boys weekend.  So I sent my little soccer player off to Omaha with a bag of his favorite treats, freshly cleaned uniforms, and a special note from me.  It melted my heart when he said he wanted to take the note with him and read it from time to time to remember me while he was gone.

Throughout the weekend he and Brian were so good about updating me on all the games, and activities going on in Omaha.  I was thrilled every time my phone lit up with a text.  I was like a crazy pre-teen that just got a phone for the first time!  They boys had a great time hanging out together at the hotel, Dave & Busters, and one night the coach had arranged for a Mexican food truck in the parking lot of the hotel to feed everybody.  FUN!

Most importantly, the Fusion Academy boys competed in the U11 Silver division and won all 4 of their games.  Take a look at our adorable champions! I Couldn’t be more proud of Jake and his teammates.  They work so hard.  But, I’m not going to lie, I was totally bummed that I wasn’t there to be a part of it.  Another life lesson…I can’t be at everything…it’s physically impossible and maybe a note from mom really can make a difference.  You rock #16.  Go Fusion!

No Anxiety Here!

I guess someone has to be the first to get a cavity.  Morgan is the winner!  Actually, I’m not 100% sure that’s accurate.  Those that know me would probably describe me as super detail oriented and I try to document every little thing that happens in my kids’ lives BUT I may be in over my head here.  Keeping accurate dental records is not my strong suit.  One thing I do remember is I took MoMo to the dentist Friday after school to get her supposed cavity filled.  I say ‘supposed’ because I’m not sure she really had one based on the conversations I had while her mouth was numbing.  The hygienist said she wouldn’t even call it a cavity…more of a stain of sorts that may turn into one.  Or maybe it’s just a super tiny one?  Or my assessment is that perhaps this is just a way for the dentist to make more money!?  Either way, I do not mess around with proper care of teeth (right Shauna!?).  She teases me because I’m obsessive over clean and pretty teeth.  Morgan actually sort of likes going to the dentist (maybe it’s an act because she likes the ice cream they hand out in the end!?)  Who’s brilliant idea is it anyway to coat your teeth with sugar after they have been professionally cleaned!?

Morgan is tough as nails.  They asked me if she needed Nitrous Oxide for anxiety.  I promptly said no because she rarely has anxiety about anything, ever! This girl just rolls with anything that comes her way.  She barely flinched and we were in and out of there in a flash.  I could learn a thing or two from Morgan because she is a champ at handling any situation.  We all have our strong points, and that is definitely one of hers!  However, I’m still hoping to keep my kids’cavities to a minimum…you know how I am about teeth 😉

May Birthdays

The month of May is the jackpot of birthdays in this family!  Our precious Grammy D, starts us off on the birthday madness on May 1st…May Day!  This May 1st, she will be 92 years old and Grammy D is quite simply…AWESOME.  We love her to pieces but she lives in Pittsburg, KS so we don’t see her as much as we would like.  However, Greg and his family get the opportunity to go to Tulsa, OK and always make a point to stop to see Grammy on their route.  This past weekend they stopped to deliver her our birthday gift – a beautiful red flowering plant (red is her favorite color) and a wal-mart gift card.  She still gets out and picks up groceries and stuff!  You go girl!  They took her out to eat in PBurg and they treated her to ice cream and happy birthday singing.  It’s a little early, but I say she should just keep on celebrating all the way up to May 1st. Isn’t she the cutest!?

Then the rest of the month we will continue on the massive May birthday celebrating with Audrey, Eli, Reece and my friend Chesley share the same bday, Frank (grandpa) and Uncle Scott G share the same birthday, my Mom (nanny), and Helena (grandma).  We’ll be in a birthday cake sugar coma for weeks!  Happy May birthdays!

Angie

Angie was our life saver when I was working.  After Morgan was born, I took a 4 month maternity leave and went back to work at Hallmark full-time.  That lasted for several months, and then I decided to try a 60% part-time schedule.  Then as I had more kids I backed down on my hours to 50% part-time and then eventually went to a part-time on call schedule (project work).  The last time I did a project, Reece was just turning 1 I think. Overall, 15 years of service with Hallmark.  With Brian’s hectic travel schedule it was just the right thing to do for our family.  Finding quality part-time daycare is really difficult!!  After a couple daycare providers, we finally found Angie and she is like part of the family now.  She has the kindest heart, a wonderful family, and loves her daycare kiddos like they are her own.  Last week she had a birthday and Reece and I stopped by to give her a birthday treat, flowers, and just catch up.  Thank you Angie for taking amazing care of our kids and happy birthday!

19 more school days

I’m going to go ahead and admit this…I am not an overachiever in the school volunteering department.  In fact, I’m lucky if I get there once a month!  However, the truth is, I do enjoy it when I’m there, I just lose track of time and before I know it we are at 19 days left in the school year.  Yep… only 19 school days left to get all your ducks in a row for summer.  Panic mode is setting in for all moms.  We have to get all camps figured out, carpooling for the camps, quickly get skinny and in shape for swimsuit season, run every errand you ever thought you might need to so you don’t have to take your kids with you and end up buying them stuff they don’t need to keep them from meltdown mode, and possibly plan a summer vacation.  All this and I still LOVE SUMMER…it is by far my favorite time of the year.  But before we get our excited summer butterflies, we still have A LOT to cram in to the end of the school year-like projects and field trips.

Drew was star of the week last week which means he had to fill in a poster, decorate it and add pictures.  Drew is not artsy-craftsy at all!  So we made it through that task with some sisterly help!  He was mostly excited to bring in his trophies to share; particularly his big golf trophy from last summer.  The instructions are very specific…do NOT bring in anything very valuable or breakable!  This was not deterring him so I offered to bring it up to the school for him.  Seriously, you know those trophies snap in half by practically looking at them wrong…especially a thin golf club!  He also brought in his lizard that we painted in Mexico a few years ago which is extremely breakable and has already been super-glued once or twice.  However, I absolutely love that he always wants to share that lizard.  It just solidifies that it was a very memorable vacation for him!  Brian also managed to sneak up to the school to eat lunch with him so I’d say he really had a great star of the week 2nd grade debut!

Now he is frantically working on his science book project that is due on Friday.  This little 8 year old guy is busy…how’s he supposed to get that done when he has baseball tourneys every weekend and either soccer or baseball practice every weeknight?  The one time we tried to start on it, he fell asleep in the middle of the floor for 3 hours wiped out from allergy medicine!  So here he is last night trying to get back on track.  Don’t be blinded by his muscles….you have to be comfortable when you are working on an important project right!?  Soon Brian will be coaching him on giving his oral presentation to the class.  We will be choosing our wardrobe more wisely.

I really only try to sign up and hopefully get picked  for the field trip locations that interest me (sounds selfish I know) but I have a lot on my plate so why not choose my volunteer opportunities carefully!?  Anyway, there are usually so many parents that want to go on field trips that they have to draw names for who goes.  So when an opportunity came up to go on a “walking field trip” with Jake’s 4th grade class, I jumped on it for a couple reasons.  It was from 10:30-11:30 (short and sweet and no need to get a babysitter for Reece), I like to exercise vs. riding a bus, and I completely realize that my days are numbered that Jakey wants to be seen within a 1 mile radius of me!  So we put on our boots and walked to the pond near the school and learned all about the critters living in there.  Top choice of field trip, not really, but the fact that Jake was excited I was going was enough for me.  He likes to hang with his buddies, Ian, Talis, & Sam Ortega and I did try to keep them on task but I’m not sure I did the best job.

Future Scientist!?

I guess this is why I’m not a teacher!  Jake and I had envisioned ourselves tromping through the water with nets catching frogs and leeches and stuff but we actually had to stay on the concrete path and the critters were brought to us.  Oh well…we can dream I guess.  4.20.16 Jake 4Gr Pond Field Trip_MPE (20)He will only be in 4th grade once and before I know it, I’ll be teaching him how to manage a locker combination in Middle School!  So Jake, PLEASE PLEASE choose me to come on your field trips and any other special day at school any time…I’m so IN buddy (even if you act squirrely with your friends)!!

Bedtime Friends

IMG_3793.JPG

Have you ever seen anything more scary!?  I took this photo last night as I went in to Reece’s room to check on her and give her a kiss.  Well, I decided against the kiss because any wrong move and this American Girl doll in a wheel chair with broken leg was going to loudly crash to the floor and cause an uproar.  It could not have been any closer to the edge of the bed hanging on by a thread.  Reece sleeps with a TON of ‘treasures’ in her bed at night but this tops it for me.  It looks like this doll is going to pounce on her at any moment.  I think we better stick to the stuffed unicorns, jaguars, puppies, penguins, and every other stuffed plush animal ever made.  Trust me, we have it!  And chances are, it is in Reece’s bed.

20 Years

On April 17, 1996, Brian and I officially started dating at Kansas State University!  Doing some quick and easy math, we have been together for 20 years already.  How did that happen!?  This summer we will be married 16 of those years.  Time is officially flying by which is another reason I wanted to start journaling a few things.  I may be too late since Morgan is going on 13.  I do have baby books for all 4 of them and some journaling of life events and I definitely have a ton of pictures to document what has been happening.  But I’m trying to get into the electronic age and start something my kids could read later without having to dig out a box of photos and a baby book.  I truly hope they do dig out their memory boxes but since the likelihood of that is pretty slim, why not put a few tid bits out in cyber space.  I can’t go back in time because it would take me the rest of my life to start at the beginning, so here we are in the Spring of 2016.  Every April 17th, Brian delivers me a bouquet of beautiful tulips which is my all-time favorite flower.  I would have an entire yard of tulips if I could.  I probably don’t have to spell this out but Brian is the most thoughtful person I’ve ever known.  I’m sure we used to probably go out and have a fun night out on April 17th as well but let’s be real, I think for years we really have been at the ball park with dust in our teeth and our kids begging for concession stand junk food and a meltdown or two.  I’ll take it.  These are life moments that we will wish back later on…I know I will at least.IMG_3790.JPG
